Featured Projects & Awards

Examples of Ground Sense Landscaping's vision carried out with style and creativity.

View the featured projects below to see a glimpse at our process and how we transform a yard from uninspiring spaces into outdoor exterior living. Our first meeting is always on-site with the homeowner or client to discuss the initial thoughts. We come up with a plan and carry it through to an end-result you will be happy with.

Dry Creek Lane:
Running Horse Ranch   View Images >

Parallel dry creek beds line either side of the driveway. The 240 foot driveway is softened, while creating an authentic Southwestern-styled entrance to this working horse ranch.

A rustic 400 foot split-rail cedar fence traces the drive and creek beds, offering a place for the eye to rest. The fence continues around the property and adds division between property and grasslands. Feature stones and drought-tolerant plants accent the beds for visual interest and add a year-round display of colour.

ASSOCIATE: Dave and Jenny Klotz
A steeply sloped bank is transformed into a multi-tiered yard, creating areas of usable space including a patio, grassy area, hammock pergola and water feature.

Stairs from the lowest tier lead up before opening up into the yard, where a 560 sqft patio forms the middle tier. A split fishbone wall borders the patio and grass. A unique custom built-in bench also camouflages the propane tank. The hammock pergola’s wooden rows are framed by custom-milled rough-cut timbers, where grapevines will intertwine.

ASSOCIATE: Roots to Shoots Nursery Ltd.
A curved hydra-pressed patio walkway leads from the gates to the expansive driveway. Various species of rare and common plants (such as the oldest tree in civilization - a Metasequoia, and a Tulip Tree), are separated by islands of grass, walkways and borders, creating a series of beautiful vignettes.

A custom rough cut timber pergola covers a traditional garden swing. The elaborate “garden rooms” include a rose garden, primrose section and woodland garden. Also a Karl Foerster grass border and spectacular imported Artesian fountain. Large existing trees, including a Red Japanese Maple, Larix and Corkscrew Willow, were saved as backdrops for planting.

With the green element in play the choice was to use a permeable paver to allow additional parking and green space to flourish. Access to the property provides simple yet elegant touches of natural rock walls as well as xeriscaping to accent green spaces.

A meandering path to the rear of the home provides a vast and intriguing setting of veggie gardens, xeriscaping, grass play area and fenced area in which to enjoy the morning sunrise.

A 260-square-foot, free-form deck with built in fire-pit is framed by an airy pergola built from sustainable blue-stained Mountain Pine beetle kill harvested from local dead-standing timbers.

The intimate setting is complemented by gentle sounds of the backyard’s main attraction – a self re-circulating water feature with stream, which drops 18 inches over 35 feet  creating a haven for area song-birds.

The creation of “seamless serenity” includes a 60 foot re-circulating stream which meanders along the perimeter of the property and eventually beneath custom-contoured HydraPressed patio slabs.

The stream includes 1’ dramatic drops along emerald slate sheets, and is framed amidst rocks and boulders. By incorporating a 20 foot pond just above the river shore, a creative “trick of the eye” connects the presence of water on both sides of the patio suggesting continuous flow beneath.

The 500 square-foot patio area incorporates a herringbone pattern of dark charcoal and natural grey “Hydra Pressed” patio slabs, providing a practical, durable surface with a modern feel.

A comfortable seating area that accommodates friends and grandchildren is covered by a custom, rough-cut Douglas Fir pergola giving adequate shade without inhibiting the view.

The centre-piece of the space is a circular brick and stone fire pit that offers welcome heat on chilly evenings ensuring outdoor enjoyment despite the weather conditions or the season. The custom fire pit is built with accent brick that complement the colours in the patio slab.

The previous uninspiring Kentucky Blue Grass grass and bark mulch – is now a striking combination of resilient HydraPressed slabs in contrasting light and charcoal grey colors in a charming urban patio design.

The black xeriscape lava walkway leads to the back of the house, and continues around the perimeter of the outdoor space providing contrast to the lighter toned slab tiles. This serves as a frame for the patio, and a border to an unobscured valley view just beyond the property.
